Creative writing of haiku poems and its effects on the English language lexical acquisition with secondary school learners

Abstract

This study represents a pedagogy research on the effect of involving 6th grade students in creative haiku poetry tasks aiming at development of their English language lexical knowledge. The current research is administered during the second term of 2018/2019 school year at Yordan Yovkov Secondary School – Tervel, Bulgaria. The methodology of the study involves two types of research groups of learners – the experimental group includes the students enrolled in the process of innovative implementation of creative writing activities focusing on lexical improvement and the control group consists of students whose tuition followed the lesson plans and activities of a traditional foreign language classroom. The data emanated is processed statistically in a quantitative analysis as well as a qualitative interpretation is involved through the medium of content-analysis of the haiku poems created by the students. Based on the findings, the study concludes that the participants in the experimental research group show better results as far as it concerns lexical acquisition compared to the knowledge demonstrated by the students of the control group. The implementation of creative writing tasks is proven to be an effective teaching practice generating positive results in students’ foreign language lexical knowledge.
