Premarital Cohabitation аnd its’ Effect on Academic Performance оf Tertiary Institutions Students in Osun State, Nigeria
The study assessed premarital cohabitation among students of tertiary institutions and its effects on their academic performance in Osun State. The survey research design was adopted for the study. A sample of 1200 students was selected from public tertiary institutions in Osun State which was stratified into University, Polytechnic and College of Education. 400 students were randomly selected from each selected institution making a total of 1200 respondents out of which 1165 were used for the study. Data were collected using Premarital Cohabitation Questionnaire’ (PCQ). Data were analysed using percentages statistics. The results showed that 23.17% of students who participated in the study actually cohabited. The results also revealed that 77.6% of students who cohabited did so because it gave them the opportunity to learn about their partners' habits and character. Furthermore, the study revealed that there was a significant difference in the academic performance of students who cohabits and those who do not cohabits. The study recommended that school management should set up compelling techniques that will recommend obviously characterized authority sanctions against those associated with premarital cohabitation.
